What Did You Say? Post 1

WE REMEMBER

10% of what we read

20% of what we hear

30% of what we see

50% of what we see and hear

70% of what we discuss with others

80% of what we personally experience

95% or what we teach others

- Edgar Dale

You have all sat and listened to each other speak today for 5 minutes. Blog what you can remember from your one-sided conversation. Be sure to comment on each others' entries and let your listener know what percentage he/she remembered accurately. Let's see who the good listeners are!

  1. a little unsure about this... did you want to know what I said, or what she, my partner, "Becca" said? She told me about her older and younger sisters, about how she feels that she was not doing a very good job at the 5 min exercise, she told me a little about her high- milage car, how she can never find on- campus parking (even though she has her sticker) and parks down by Wallgreens, spoke a little about an apartment-not sure if it's hers or her sisters (hearing loss on my part), repeated several times that she wasn't good at talking about herself... she did fine!

Laura said that she has a baby 4 months old, that her mom,
who is the best in the world, take care of him while she is studying photography at San Antonio College,
which is the best school for that, in San Antonio.
She has a Master in Fine Arts and she loves Photography. She is very friendly and nice person.

  4. On thursday I had the pleasure of having a one sided conversation with the already infamous Ebony.... At the beginning of our conversation she went first and immediately began by stating that this was suuupppper awkward. She broke me down by what I was wearing and how I looked. She noticed that I wore Raybands and wore Coverse every day. That was surprising. Then she talked about how she was a speech major and currently on the speech team. Then again she kept saying how awkward this exercise was. She told me that she was from texas. It was hard to listen when I could not interject or ask questions. I found myself zoning out and trying to remember what she was talking about. I cant really remember anything else. I know that is not 5 minutes of information but It has been a couple days since the exercise. good times.

  5. okay well I talked with Nicole and she just started asking me all these questions about what I said. Then she mentioned how she was reading hes just not that into you and then she started rambling about her boyfriend. Also she said her hair looked weird in the morning when she tried to straighten it so thats why she wore it up! Thats pretty much all I can remember!

  6. I missed class last Thursday, so my post will be from what I remember about Mrs Wilking from Tuesday's class.
She's from Hawaii, was homeless and adopted in her teens (officially later). Did good in school, but didn't believe in herself. In part because of the mistakes of school's staff and methodology of place children!
She's married. And if I am not mistaken she has children.

  8. Hmm…
My partner (I’m pretty sure it was…Jess…) began with what she is doing in school; taking 5 courses, so she is a little intimidated, but remains confidant. However, three of those are speech related which she deems enjoyable, the other two consist of biology, and history. She also told me about her involvement with the (speech)/ (debate)? team, how she and Ashley are practicing for a dual performance on the topic of plastic surgery. She explained to me that women under the age of 18 are increasingly seeking the operating table as a means of improving their image, and their performance will ideally shine some light on the matter. She continued into describing her job. Music is definitely something she enjoys so she was pleased to tell me she worked at a CD Exchange; she was not pleased to tell me about her manager that is possibly looking to terminate her. He is apparently not by any means supportive of her scholastic responsibilities. Her birthday is approaching and lands on a weekend, because she has used so many weekends for speech practice, he will not let her enjoy the day off. She then revealed her plan to sneak laxatives into his coffee and lock the bathroom to get even... (just kidding!!!)

  9. Hello Everyone....I also missed class this passed Thursday so I will use an event from my day. I hope that this will be OK with you Mrs. Wilking.
First, I work with individuals who have mental and physical disabilities. After an acting out behavior with one of the guys I gave him an opportunity to vent......He spent a few minutes expressing how unhappy he was to live at a group home. The food, the room and the staff (ouch). He went on to say that he missed his home and wanted to go back. He told me he was not ready to grow up yet, repeatedly. I let him know that I was happy that he spoke to me about what was on his mind. He said he was sorry for his behavior then we shook hands. We ate hotdogs and tater tots for dinner.

  10. Wow Edgar listen pretty good. I didn't mean to sound like I left my kids without a mommy for the day, I was just trying to teach them about their actions and the consequences that come along with them and being more resposible. Lisa I remember her talking about how much she enjoys this class and how she really likes the instructor and how good she is. Also how her grandmother says things (rude things) out loud, but then thats the way she is. Also how she make look like a slacker but its a wrong perception on her.

  11. I spoke to Edgar and Joanna on Thursday, and I listened to Joanna. Joanna spoke about her children, that are all in school. Her kids are active in sports - soccer and basketball (just starting on wednesdays? i believe). She has a daughter that is at SAC and when she accompanied her daughter during a session with an academic counselor, her daughter caught her off guard and told the counselor that her mother was going to be attending school as well. Overall, she believes it was a great change in her life and enjoys school. It is her "away time". She did mention that her younger ones were misbehaving in school and she had to discipline them by taking away their privileges - no mommy spoiling (cooking, etc). Just to show them some tough love :) I spoke about my grandmother and how she likes dancing until 3am, how I enjoy going to the movies with her because she always surprises me with her wit and sarcasm. I also mentioned about the reason for my tardiness (an employment drug screening that was necessary to be done before 12pm that day). Its been days since the conversations, but I think I did pretty well. :)

  13. Doug hit the nail on the head. I was quite uncomfortable sitting there for five straight minutes just talking. Doug spoke about being in the military and his wife and him being reunited after a very long time. He said he was from the valley and was a technical engineer who wanted to focus on his education after plenty of experience in the field.

  14. ok during this exercise I listened to Bianca express how she went to Roosevelt High School, she loved my shoes, and how she enjoyed the military. She also likes to hang out with her frieds and chill or go out sometimes. While in this exercise I realized that Bianca and I had alot of things in common..I also graduated from Roosevelt High School, and I will be attended the Air Force after I recieve my LVN certificate..I found out that she knows my brother and graduated with him. They use to hang out alot during High School. From this exercise I got to meet a new friend and reunite an old friendship between my brother and Bianca.

  15. My partner is a tom boy; whose family owns a ranch with cows, pigs, and chickens. She also is not a fan of san antonio college or even school in general.

  16. Well since I was unable to attend school because of my car you told me to blog about what was discussed in Class.

First off, I actually enjoyed the part about bad/good listening habits. Throughout the discussion I notice that I was guilty of a few of the bad habits, such as interrupting when others are talking, and being easily distracting when people are saying things to me.

I also like the little excersize we did that went over whether men or women were more pron to certain behaviors. While I got most of them right, a few of them I was actually shocked to hear the opposite was true of what I orginally thought. I could have swore women touched others more than men, but I found out that was not true.

Overall, there was alot of interesting things I learned and found intersting and It really made me aware of things I didn't know.

  18. Oh gawd! I can't even remember my partners name. How rude! Thats something I've got to work on! And I re-read the posts hoping to read his...but I don't see it. My partner spke alot about his family and a little about school. He went into detail about his neices and nephews (i believe) discussing how old they were, how tall they were and perhaps even a bit about their personalities. Clearly, I remember generalities and not details. He compared last sememster to this semester ( I think). I did notice however, that I went first in the exercise and he seemed to discuss the same topics (i.e. family and school) when it was his turn. I had a really hard time just sitting there not giving feedback. I kept laughing.....what else? I believe I talked his ear off, feeling like the 5 min went by fast. He on the otherhand talked slower and kept looking at the clock. Overall, I'd say I only retained about 20% of it.

  19. Keisha was the person I listened to for 5 min straight. She was kinda shy at first as she talked about her favorite shoes. She said she was out going and like to hang out with her friends. She told me how she wanted to go into the airforce. She then said something about not brushing her hair lol. She was going to become LVN. We also went to the same high school. And it turns out I know her brother as well. Small world. We still talked about other stuff outside the class and laught about other stuff.. overall it was a good experience.
